Creating the Perfect Home and Garden

Choosing A Shutter Style For Your Windows

Shutters are a stylish window covering option that can add to your home's kerb appeal. They offer a practical solution for those looking for a little more privacy or those wanting to block out some of the midday light, and they can also be locked to provide extra security. Available in hardwood, MDF and vinyl, shutters require very little maintenance and can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. Louvre and panel shutters are common options for residential properties. Louvre shutters allow some natural light into the room when they are in use, while panel shutters completely block out the light. Once you have decided on the type of shutters for your home, you will need to decide on the style that's right for your windows and your lifestyle. Here's an overview of three popular shutter styles for you to consider:

Café Style Shutters

Café style shutters do not cover the entire window. They are hung on the bottom half of the window and are a cost-effective option for those who don't want to completely block out natural light. They are also ideal for those who live at street level and want to increase privacy and prevent passers-by from peering in through the windows.

Double Hung Shutters

Double hung shutters consist of two sets that are hung one on top of the other. Each set operates independently, so you can choose to have the top set open and the bottom set closed, which allows you more control over privacy and natural light levels in your home. They are a versatile option and can be installed with a horizontal gap between the top and bottom shutters, which ensures some natural light is always able to enter the room, or they can be installed with no gap, which allows you to completely block out light when both sets are closed.

Full Height Shutters

Full height shutters cover the entire window, and they look particularly stylish with tall windows. They are available with a wide variety of centre panels that include plain, etched and moulded designs. They are also available with solid centre panels at the bottom and louvre panels at the top.

If you're interested in installing shutters on your windows, discuss the options with your local window shutter company. They can visit your home and measure your windows, and they can make recommendations based on the size of your windows and your lifestyle. They will also show you a range of shutter options to help you make the right decision before investing in this type of home improvement.
